Vienna Wien Augarten Porcelain Spanish Riding School Horse & Rider Levade
This is one of eight figures in the Spanish Riding School series from the world famous Vienna Porcelain Manufactory Augarten. The "Weiner Porzellanmanufaktur Augarten" was founded in 1718 and is the second oldest in Europe. Augarten is famous for the pure "whiteness" of its porcelain, its exquisite craftsmanship and delicate painting. "Levade" and the other Spanish Riding School figurines, were created by world renowned artist Professor Albin Dobrich who worked for the manufactory from 1924 until 1930. The Spanish Riding School is well known for its equestrian spectacles. Each figure in the series captures one of the haute ecole (high school) steps and movements. The Spanish Rider Series was comprised of Courbette, Levade with rider, Levade without rider, Pirouette, Piaffe, Trot, In the posts and Capriole. 68 separate parts were used when making Levade. Using techniques that required years of development, all the weight of the horse is on the hind legs and tail. The rider is wearing his parade uniform of red tailcoat with gold epaulettes.
On the bottom of the figurine is the "Wien Augarten" porcelain mark. A loss to a small section of rein over the saddle is the only condition issue.
