"Courbette" and the other Spanish Riding School figurines, were created by world renowned artist Professor Albin Dobrich who worked for the manufactory from 1924 until 1930. The Spanish Riding School is well known for its equestrian spectacles. Each figure in the series captures one of the haute ecole (high school) steps and movements. The Spanish Rider Series was comprised of Courbette, Levade with rider, Levade without rider, Pirouette, Piaffe, Trot, In the posts and Capriole.
The Courbette movement is basically what is known as school jump. The horse jumps even distances in the levade position without touching the ground with its forelegs, which stay raised.
This is an extremely difficult maneuver and requires great strength from the horse and rider. 68 separate parts were used when making Courbette. Using techniques that required years of development, all the weight of the horse is on the hind legs and tail. The rider is wearing his parade uniform of red tailcoat with gold epaulettes. On one side of the stand is written "Courbette Spanische Reitschule" and one the other side "Hofburg Wien".
On the bottom of the figurine is the "Wien Augarten" porcelain mark. This horse and rider is in PERFECT condition. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
