The history of porcelain manufacturing in German Thuringia started in 1762. That year Georg Heinrich Macheleid approached the Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt who granted him the exclusive privilege to build a porcelain factory. Wilhelm Greiner and Karl Holzapfel bought the factory two years later, and at the end of the 18th century, it was already known throughout Europe, offering 95 different types of figurines. In 1832 the factory lost its exclusive privilege, and other porcelain manufacturers also appeared in Volkstedt and nearby regions. The next changes in ownership were 1815-60 Greiner, Stauch & Co. And in 1861-75 Macheleid, Triebner & Co.In 1899, the factory became a stock company. The name was changed to Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanfabrik AG which. Is one of the last remaining great German porcelain manufactures still working in the tradition of the 18th Century golden age of German porcelain. Their porcelain is still made the way it was over 200 years ago in the same building for almost that long in the former East Germany. Aelteste Volkstedter, like the very similar Meissen, was nurtured by the state to preserve this prestigious art form.
After WWII, the manufactory was transferred to the VEB Zierporzellanwerke Lichte as the VEB Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur. Now it is a part of the Seltmann Weiden group. Volkstedt gained a reputation for its finely painted and carefully modeled porcelain figures that it holds for collectors today. ITEM(s) COME FROM A PET AND SMOKE-FREE HOME.
